Protecting private land creates vital wildlife corridors linking larger public reserves. This enables species that need to move through the landscape with safer passage in a highly fragmented landscape. A conservation covenant is one means of protecting private land; it not only guarantees the preservation of habitat, it also seeks to improve the condition of the habitat by reducing non-native species and taking steps to improve conditions for various plant and animal species. Five yearly reviews enable a landowner to measure the changes in habitat condition over time while a conservation covenant also gives the landowner access to funding to assist them in their valuable work.
